As we enter the new year, the 2025 income tax filing season is approaching.
Some of you may have made donations to municipalities across Japan last year using the hometown tax donation program.
The program allows individuals to receive deductions from their income and individual resident taxes on the portion of their donation exceeding 2,000 yen when they donate to a municipality of their choice.
To qualify for a deduction for the donated amount as a hometown tax donation program, you must file a tax return. If you made donations in 2025, you will file your tax return during the 2026 tax filing period.
Please be sure to attach to your tax return either a “Donation Receipt” issued by the municipality or a “Certificate of Donation Deduction” issued by a designated operator.
For more information on the system, please consult a tax accountant or the tax office.
